We recently had a chance to sample Saleen’s newest offering, the S331 Sport Truck, in and around Newport Beach, California. A small fleet of these sport trucks looked right at home parked in front of the Harbor, directly in the shadows of the multi-million dollar yachts at the Balboa Bay Club. We even had an older couple chase us down in their customized BMW 7-series and place an order. We kid you not. The S331 is a new vehicle and new segment for this small manufacturer better known for its Mustangs and S7 supercar. Getting into trucks was a logical development for Saleen, as the dealerships that handle their products report that nearly three quarters of their sales are trucks. So when there appeared to be enough interest in a Saleen truck, they decided to build one. Notice we said \”build one\” and not… Read the rest of this entry

Ford will be unveiling another production intent vehicle at the New York Auto Show next week that has a connection to last year’s SEMA show. Back in November we showed you the custom Expedition that Funkmaster Flex brought to Las Vegas for the big show. Next week Ford will be announcing that a version of this truck will go into production this fall. The production version is truly the spitting image of the original show truck produced for SEMA, with the most obvious change being new 20-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels. It features a 3d Carbon body kit that spruces up the front and rear fascias while adding side skirts to lower the truck\’s visual height. The Black and Colorado Red paint job with Orange pinstriping… Read the rest of this entry

We reported late last year that Chip Foose had hooked up with Ford to produce some special Foose-ified Blue Oval models, and the F-150 is the first vehicle to get the famous tuner\’s treatment. Based on the F-150 FX2 Sport, the Foose Edition will not only be the fastest F-150 every produced, faster even than the SVT Lightning, it will also be the fastest half-ton pickup in the world, according to Ford.
The truck has been lowered and sits on giant 22-inch wheels. A new grille and bumper up front are joined by rocker panels that accentuate the lowered look, while the body is adorned with custom striping. The interior… Read the rest of this entry

Road & Track magazine has come clean with its take on (and photos of) the all-new Subaru Impreza WRX. The previously-releasedMotor Trend photo spread did absolutely nothing for the car, and was largely met with cries of anguish, pulling of hair and much gnashing of teeth. The new Subie\’s 5-door appearance has proven to be controversial so far, mostly because it just didn\’t look good in those particular photos. R&T\’s pics cast it the car in a different light, and .
The new front end design is a lot more appealing than the Motor Trend cover led us to believe. Road & Track’s pictures, taken outside in sunlight, show that the grillework is not overly shiny. In fact, it appears to have a predominantly matte finish, with a little extra shine on the side and lower borders. The car’s substantial hood scoop is… Read the rest of this entry

Maserati\’s revival is moving full speed ahead. Having launched the highly anticipated GranTurismo, the Trident marque is preparing the new Spyder for debut at the Frankfurt show in September.
Based on the new GranTurismo, the Spyder does away with the rear seats in favor of a folding hard-top. We can also expect some visual changes for the open-top version. Power will come from the GT\’s 405-hp 4.2-liter V8 driving through the six-speed ZF auto-box debuted on the Quattroporte Automatic.
Paparazzi caught the Spyder undergoing cold-weather testing in northern Sweden, which is just about as cold a climate as you\’ll find anywhere. Maserati will be depending on the new Spyder to secure sales success as the once niche carmaker drives for a larger market share against established competitors like the Mercedes SL, BMW 6-Series and Jaguar XK.
Sure, the modern bare-bones open sports cars like the Ariel Atom and KTM X-Bow get all the attention these days, but some of us here at Autoblog still think that the 50-year-old Lotus Seven design in use by the speed fiends at Caterham is the way to go. After all, you simply can’t argue with the performance the automaker regularly delivers to its customers.
Further proof arose this week with the launch of the astounding Superlight R400. Sporting a more rigid frame and a 2.0L Ford Duratec four-cylinder tuned in-house by Caterham Motorsport, the car has 210 horsepower on tap. Don’t sniff at it. The R400 weighs in at a paltry 1,157 pounds and races to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds. Shifts come courtesy of a six-speed manual, and the car’s race-inspired themes are reinforced with features such as carbon-fiber fenders, a quick-release steering… Read the rest of this entry

Visitors to the 2007 International Security Convention West show (ISC West) in Las Vegas had a chance to get up close and personal with the future of police patrol vehicles. On display was the new three-wheeled chariot from T3 Motion. Sort of a Segway with sirens, the T3 Series security model boasts a top speed of 18-25 mph. That should be good enough to catch a fleeing suspect, but the T3 will most likely show its benefit in keeping officers fresh for when they have to dismount and really start a pursuit.
Powered by two rechargeable batteries, it will cost about $8,000 but offers a much lower per-mile cost than just about anything this side of a bicycle. Extra batteries can be carried and swapped in as necessary for a longer range and recharge times are 4-6 hours when you get back to the station. It\’s… Read the rest of this entry
The future of Ford’s Special Vehicle Team has been cloudy for the past few years. The hope that it would remain around in some form or another took a hit when its current chief, Hau Thai-Tang, was tapped to head Ford of Brazil earlier this year. Nevertheless, SVT indeed soldiers on and today we have proof that they\’re hard at work on a new project.
Winding Road managed to corner Jamal Hameedi, Chief Nameplate Engineer at SVT, at a Ford event in Detroit this morning. Hameedi revealed to WR that nearly all of SVT\’s resources are busy developing a new truck, and by \”truck\” he means a \”body-on-frame\” vehicle. Thus, whether it\’s a new F-150 Lightning or possibly a different F-Series model, an Explorer, Expedition or Ranger is unkown.
So, no Ford Taurus SHO developed by SVT or SVT Fusion. This kind of makes sense… Read the rest of this entry
