Attention ponycar people: the V6-powered Challenger SE is now available with a pretty slick new dress-up package. The Challenger SE Rallye takes the base car and adds stripes, an R/T-style chrome fuel door, black-accented 18-inch wheels, and a rear decklid spoiler. The Rallye also introduces the 5-speed AutoStick to the six-cylinder Challengers. The 4-speed slushbox is history, and the 5-speed is reportedly geared for more energetic launches. Think of it as a package akin to the killer-looking R/T Classic, only for the entry-level car. Starting price, according to the Pentastar, is $26,490 and it can be ordered immediately. Ridiculously long PR follows the jump.

Boring. Predictable. The world's most expensive parade. Sound familiar? If it does, chances are you've steered clear (so to speak) of Formula One for the past decade or so. And even the most red-blooded racing enthusiasts among us would have to admit that you had good reason.
As spectacular as it was, Michael Schumacher's domination of the pinnacle of motor racing got a little boring after a while. Schumi's long since retired – his lackluster brother Ralf, too – but the past couple seasons since have still been dominated by the rival powerhouses of McLaren and Ferrari trading places on the podium and hoisting the championship trophies. This weekend's Australian Grand Prix seems to have opened a new chapter in motorsports, however, kicking off a season that stands a… Read the rest of this entry

When the Nissan GT-R SpecV was unveiled, we called it “Nissan's most super of supercars.” We were, uh, mistaken. Inside Line spent a few fast days in Japan trying out the SpecV under the eye of the car's chief engineer, Kazutoshi Mizuno. At the end of it, he casually told them that “The SpecV, in contrast to what you might be thinking, is not the high-performance version of the GT-R.”
So no matter what 'Ring time the GT-R SpecV posts next month, there's still another, quicker one coming. The question is, how is it coming? A stripped-out, lightweight trackie? More base horsepower and torque, instead of a time-limited torque booster? Rockets and lasers? We have our own ideas of what could trump the SpecV, but we look forward to finding out what The Creator himself has in mind. Hat tip to Jim.

One of the weakest points of the base V6-equipped Dodge Challenger SE has been the transmission. Chrysler saddled the SE with the old four-speed automatic instead of the Mercedes designed five-speed used in the V8 models. Chrysler used the occasion of an LX owners meet this weekend to debut a new SE Rallye edition that finally gives the V6 the extra ratio it needs. The Rallye also gets hood and decklid stripes, and five spoke 18-inch wheels. Hopefully Chrysler tightens up the suspension a bit to eliminate some of the floatiness of the SE. The SE Rallye will reportedly run $26,490 after production starts next month.

General Motors' OnStar in-car communications system can give you directions or help you make a phone call, and soon it may also be able to send and receive Tweets. Gear Live recently received a survey from the General announcing that Twitter functionality could soon be on the way.
With a press of a vehicle's OnStar button, users will reportedly be able to send voice-activated Tweets of up to 140 bytes to everyone in their Twitter network. The text would automatically be added to the owner's Twitter account via the “What are you doing?” section at the top of the page. The system would also read aloud messages that are sent to the OnStar user.
Adding Twitter functionality would be a boon for fans of the social networking site, while also giving users less of an incentive to take their eyes off the road to check for messages… Read the rest of this entry

Christian Streiff, CEO of PSA Peuget/Citroen since early 2007, has been pushed out by Peugeot's board, controlled by members of the Peugeot family. Streiff took the position after a short, turbulent stint as CEO of Airbus, and his time at Peugeot wasn't much more relaxing. Upon taking the position he stirred things up, changing how models were developed and manufactured. The company earned profits of €885 million in 2007, and while Streiff was controversial to some, he was safe.
Last summer Streiff suffered a stroke and was off work for a couple of months. He returned to work just as things were caving and everyone was wondering whether Peugeot was going to merge with another automaker. When the final numbers were tallied for 2008, Peugeot had lost €343 million ($433 million) for the year. But the real issue appeared to be that Streiff was never clear about what… Read the rest of this entry

PARIS — It may go down as Bloody Sunday in the global auto industry: Christian Streiff, CEO of PSA Peugeot Citro?n, was removed from his post on the same day the head of General Motors was told by the U.S. government to leave. Streiff is being replaced by an outside turnaround specialist, Philippe Varin, at the top of the French auto company.
PSA and the other major French auto company, Renault, were the recent beneficiaries of a French government bailout. PSA Peugeot Citro?n reported a $451 million loss in 2008 and predicts similar results for 2009. Its stock has dropped almost 70 percent in the past year.
Streiff's ouster was the result of a unanimous vote on Sunday by the board of directors, the company… Read the rest of this entry

Freshly ousted General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner issued a statement on Monday that concluded with a vote of confidence: “GM is a great company with a storied history. Ignore the doubters because I know it is also a company with a great future.” He is shown here introducing the battery for the upcoming Chevrolet Volt in January, at the Detroit auto show. WASHINGTON — The painful restructuring of the Detroit auto industry intensified over the weekend as the Obama White House demanded the ouster of General Motors chairman Rick Wagoner, expressed doubt that Chrysler could survive and suggested that a quick bankruptcy for both companies may be the next and culminating solution.
In announcing his departure as CEO, Wagoner said he was asked on Friday to leave by Administration officials. GM said Fritz Henderson, the company's president and chief… Read the rest of this entry

The government now backs warranties on new Chrysler and GM vehicles, even if the automakers are forced into bankruptcy. Pictured: Chevrolet Malibu. (Photo courtesy of General Motors Corporation)
WASHINGTON — In an unprecedented step, the federal government said it will “backstop” warranties on new General Motors and Chrysler vehicles “in the event that the manufacturer cannot.” The move is clearly designed to prevent a complete death spiral in the sales of GM and Chrysler vehicles as the government announces its massive restructuring plan for the automakers on Monday.
The program will cover consumers who buy a new GM or Chrysler vehicle during the restructuring period, according to a U.S. Treasury Department statement. The commitment is automatic; consumers do not have to “do anything” to qualify.
“The Administration is confident that GM will emerge as a stronger company and is hopeful that Chrysler can reach an… Read the rest of this entry
