STUTTGART, Germany — Mercedes unveiled the new E63 AMG sedan last week at the 2009 New York Auto Show, and now comes the official word that there will be no two-door companion in the near future. Mercedes-Benz has “no immediate plans to offer an AMG version of the new E-Coupe,” Mercedes spokesman Rob Moran confirmed for Inside Line.
Other sources tell Inside Line that the decision could be reversed, depending on customer feedback, but for now the BMW M3 Coupe and Convertible chug on without direct competition from Mercedes.
Instead, Mercedes will promote the 2010 E550 Coupe as the range-topping model, and will offer an AMG Sports package as an upgrade. The E550's new direct-injection V8 makes 382 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. In comparison, the E63 AMG sedan develops 518 hp and 465 lb-ft.
The AMG Sports package for the E550 coupe bundles an aero body kit (front apron, larger air intakes, side skirts, rear apron) with 18-inch AMG alloy wheels, performance tires, sport suspension, quicker steering and larger brakes.
