WOKING, England — McLaren Automotive says it plans to set up a high-tech production facility that would have the capacity to build up to 20 McLaren sports cars per day. The announcement is a major step toward the automaker's plan to launch a new range of McLaren sports cars starting in 2011.

Earlier this spring, McLaren Automotive said it is developing “a range of pure McLaren sports cars that will build on the great successes of the McLaren F1 and Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren.”

The production facility will employ about 800 and have an initial annual production capacity of around 1,000, increasing to around 4,000 when the range is complete, according to a statement by the company.

Few details are available about the lineup. McLaren Automotive describes the cars as “mid-engined, highly efficient high-performance sports cars.” No details yet on names, technical specifications or pricing.
